Readiness For Water Management On Söderfjärden

The Project Beredskap för vattenhantering på Söderfjärden – Grundvattenkartläggning, (Readiness For Water Management On Söderfjärden – Groundwater Measurement).

Österbottens Svenska Lantbrukssällskap is the Project owner. Project time is 1.11.2022 – 31.12.2024.

The main target of the project is to research new solutions for water management on farmland and create preparedness for climate change. The groundwater measurements help us understand how the water moves during different times of the year. And allows us to better optimize the water management on farmland. In the area of Söderfjärden 15 digital groundwater pins have been installed which collects information virtually.

An innovative group has been formed for the project and it consists of farmers, members of the drainage community, ELY – Center experts, IT experts, advisors, researchers, and public guardianship. The innovation group meets regularly to discuss the project’s activities and bring good ideas to the project team.

The groundwater pins were installed in the spring of 2023 and measures the groundwater level, soil moisture, soil temperature and precipitation. Information from the groundwater pins is automatically transferred to the project’s website, where everyone can follow up the collected data. The collected data from Söderfjärdens measurement stations can be found at (https://sensors.soderfjarden.fi).

The Goal of the project is to analyze the measurement data and create a preparedness plan based on the collected data. Over drainage, for example, is one of the problems that needs to be investigated and solutions needs to be found that will benefit the whole farmland of Söderfjärden.

Beredskap för vattenhantering på Söderfjärden – Grundvattenkartläggning is a EIP financed project. In European innovation partnership projects, the goal is to solve a problem identified in advance, related to primary production, from which an innovation may arise.
